Vince Aletti
Issues: A History of Photography in Fashion Magazines
Phaidon
New York, 2019
Critic Vince Aletti’s Issues is the first survey to examine fashion magazines and provide new understanding of the form’s importance to the history of photography and its evolution since 1925. Amanda Maddox praises it as “deeply personal, incredibly scholarly, very accessible, and easy to read. All in all, it’s a massive feat and a rare resource for studying magazines.” Issues showcases how magazines have empowered or pushed photographers, given them room to experiment and play, and expanded their careers, in fashion and beyond. This glossy paperback tome is enclosed in a hefty magazine file box and includes the work of such photographers as Diane Arbus, Richard Avedon, Horst P. Horst, Inez and Vinoodh, Irving Penn, Collier Schorr, Cindy Sherman, and Juergen Teller, among many others. All of the selections were culled from Aletti’s extensive personal collection, and while it doesn’t aim to cover everything, Aletti’s expertise and editing makes this a long-standing resource and encouragement for more research on the subject.
